Archipelago traffic
About the archipelago traffic
Waxholmsbolaget co-ordinates and runs the public transport system in Stockholms archipelago. Our ships has operated in the archipelago for over 130 years. Waxholmsbolaget owns 20 archipelago ships which are operated by different carriers.
There are a number of private shipping companies in various sizes who operates traffic in the archipelago. Waxholmsbolaget has traffic - and rate collaboration with most of these shipping companies.
During one year we carry about 1,8 passengers in the archipelago. The shipping companies timetables are divided into three traffic areas: northern, middle and southern archipelago. There's a big range of variation in number of travellers depending on time of year and therefor there are different timetables for the different seasons of the year. Spring, summer, fall and winter timetables. We also have a special timetable for Christmas and Easter holidays depending on which time it occurs.
We usually classify the ships in three differents types, the old steam boats with the old feeling of the turn of the century. The winter ships that can get around all year and that except for taking passengers also take a good-size of cargo and the modern ships built in aluminium with strong engines that will transport you fast and safe to different destinations.
Our modern ships are adapted for disabled persons. There are restrooms for the disabled and a minimum of doorsteps. The gangways are wide and equipped with rails. There is always crew onboard to help with boarding and getting off.
