Waxholms Ångfartygs AB, in daily speech called Waxholmsbolaget has operated in Stockholm's archipelago since 1869. 1970 Waxholmsbolaget took over the Djurgården ferries which operates in Stockholms harbour. The company is owned by Stockholm's city council since 1967.
Since January 1st of 1994 Waxholmsbolaget is the orderer of the public sea traffic in Stockholm's archipelago and harbour. The company owns 21 archipelago ships and 4 Djurgården ferries.
The following separate companies operate traffic with Waxholmsbolaget's ships:
Stockholms Sjötrafik AB: Waxholm I, Skärgården, Värmdö, Vånö, Väddö, Viberö, Vaxö, Saxaren, Söderarm, Sandhamn, Dalarö, Nämdö and Gällnö.Blidösundsbolaget AB: Norrskär, Storskär, Västan, Ramsö,Vindöga and the Djurgården ferries.Bolling & Norling AB: Roslagen and Solöga.Utö Rederi AB: Waxholm II.During the summer the archipelago traffic is operated with about 40 ships. In the harbour traffic three ferries have routes during the peak-season. During the winter the archipelago traffic is operated with 11 ships and in the harbour traffic there is 2 ferries on routes.
An area from Arholma in the north to Landsort in the south is operated in the archipelago. About 270 jetties have traffic during the summer. In the harbour traffic 3 terminals are operated during the summer.
During one year there is 1.800.000 passengers in the archipelago 2.500.000 passengers in the harbour traffic.
